Speakers: Chaomin Li, Sophia Shi, Jazmine Xian, Simon Ng

Four speakers will attend this panel discussion: A secondary school teacher, Chaomin Li, will talk about the public sector; a parent and also a professor, Sophia Shi, will talk the private sector; a university student, Jazmine Xian, and a young professional, Simon Ng, will share their experience in both public and private schools.

Chaomin Li, a high teacher who was educated in both China and Canada and teaches at Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute, Toronto District School Board. Since 2001, he has taught the subjects of science (grade nine, ten) and biology (grade 11, 12) at four different high schools. As an experienced educator, he’s also tutored and consulted many students and their parents in areas of subject learning, academic progress, school selection, university application. His daughter, Chloe Y. Li is currently studying Neurobiology and the Classics at Harvard University.

Chaomin will give a brief introduction to Ontario public schools, including the class set up, students, teachers, credits, finance, and home or optional admissions.

Dr. Sophia Shi, PhD, is a former research professor in the field of comparative institutional analysis who has been an academic visitor to many universities in Europe and North America before immigrating to Canada in 2012. Since moving to Canada, Dr. Shi has worked for the Canadian third largest law firm, Norton Rose Fulbright but is currently working as an education columnist, and researcher focusing on comparing the education system of China and Canada. Sophia has published her findings on immigrant children’s education in newspaper and magazines such as China Daily. Her work has also been recognized in major domestic and overseas Chinese online media.

Sophia will present the rationale for moving her daughter from a public to a private school. She will compare the two systems and their advantages and disadvantages. Sophia will offer some excellent suggestions to parents.

Jazmine Xian is a senior at University of Western Ontario. Next spring, she will be completing her degree in Honors Specialization in Accounting in BMOS. She finished her first eight years of education in private schools and received her high school diploma in a public school system. Jazmine has actively done research in both private and public education systems to help international students with their academic future. She is also involved in networking activities with international university students to assist them in adapting to the new environment.

Jazmine will present an overview of challenges which new immigrants and international students face when they first settle in Canada. Jazmine will summarize the experiences that previous students had when they attended elementary, middle school and high school in Toronto. She will discuss her own thoughts and experiences with both public and private education systems. Jazmine will also focus on programs and opportunities that students have access to. These programs help them to excel in either education systems ultimately preparing them for an undergraduate program.

Simon Ng is a health product developer by trade and an educator at heart. Helping children reach their dreams drives Simon’s passion for teaching. Simon was educated through the Montessori system, the Catholic school system of St. Michael’s Choir School, the rigorous International Baccalaureate program at Upper Canada College, followed by a Bachelor of Science degree, specializing in chemistry and biochemistry, at University of Western Ontario. In his spare time, Simon teaches piano and music theory, is an active volunteer at organizations for youth, such as teaching Entrepreneurship Series at Across U-Hub and coordinating programs at the Chinese Collective Arts Association.  Simon has successfully completed the Emergenetics Facilitator certification. He aims to empower youth to better understand themselves – how they think, communicate, and learn – and find success in their own passions.

Simon will share his experience in the private school system.

旨在为新移民家庭提供有关加拿大教育制度的信息和其他相关服务,帮助家长和学生在加拿大新生活中取得成功的年度教育盛会,第八届CPAC“教育日”活动将于10月24日在北约克的一所公立高中内举行(地址:100 Princess Avenue, North York, ON M2N 3R7)。

本届CPAC“教育日”活动形式更紧凑,内容更贴合当前热门的教育话题。活动当天既有教育机构设立展位,与学生和家长面对面的交流,又有一场主题演讲及三场不同教育相关主题的热门讲座。基于往届活动的经验,今年在讲题方面更多侧重于家长和学生共同感兴趣的话题,并且大部分讲座用中文讲解
