About the Project
The CPAC Institute is seeking 14 youth volunteers to assist with data collection for a research project examining Chinese Canadian representation in senior leadership positions across major sectors in Metro Vancouver.
Building on CPAC Institute’s 2021 study of leadership representation in the Greater Toronto Area, this project will establish the first comprehensive baseline dataset for Metro Vancouver. The findings will contribute to research and public dialogue on leadership diversity and representation.
Volunteers will receive training and mentorship from the project team and gain practical experience in research.
Position Description
Youth Research Volunteers will assist with collecting and organizing publicly available information on senior leadership across a range of organizations in Metro Vancouver.
Responsibilities include:
- Collecting publicly available information from organizational websites, annual reports, and other approved sources.
- Conducting research using multiple publicly available English and Chinese-language sources, where appropriate, to determine whether individuals meet the project’s coding criteria for Chinese Canadian representation.
- Documenting the evidence supporting coding decisions in accordance with the project’s standardized coding guidelines.
- Documenting leadership data, data sources and maintaining accurate and well-organized research records.
- Identifying and documenting questions or ambiguous cases for review.
- Working with fellow volunteers to conduct cross-verification of data and resolve discrepancies to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
- Perform other project-related duties as assigned.
- Participating in project orientation, training sessions, and regular check-in meetings.
- Submitting weekly work journals and volunteer hour logs.
Eligibility
This project is supported in part by the GLOCAL Foundation’s National Youth Service Network (NYSN) Program. Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or refugee status
- Ages 15-30
- High school diploma or higher
- Interested in research, public policy, social sciences, community development, or related fields
- Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and a strong sense of responsibility and accountability
- Able to work independently and collaborate effectively with others
- Deep commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work and meeting project deadlines
- Ability to read Chinese is an asset.
- Familiarity with Chinese naming conventions and cultural contexts is an asset.
Previous research experience is an asset but is not required. Training will be provided.
Time Commitment
- Approximately 120 volunteer hours over 12–16 weeks, averaging 8–10 hours per week
- Participation in project orientation and regular online meetings is required.
Participant Support
Participants will receive:
- Research training and mentorship
- Hands-on experience contributing to a large-scale social research project
- Opportunities to develop transferable research skills
- A $1,000 honorarium through the NYSN Program upon successful completion of the project requirements
- A Civic Service Certificate signed by the Minister of Jobs and Families upon completion of 120 volunteer hours and the project requirements
