Alex Cui

Alex Cui is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of GPTZero, a platform for detecting AI-generated content. His work has earned international recognition, industry partnerships, and enthusiastic investment, making GPTZero a leader in AI detection.

Alex studied computer science at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He later earned a master’s degree in computer science at the University of Toronto, focusing on AI and machine learning. He conducted research under Professor Raquel Urtasun, a leading expert in self-driving technology, at her startup, Waabi. He also worked at Facebook as a machine learning engineer, specializing in AI research, and Uber’s self-driving division, working on autonomous vehicle technology. His research on human-AI interaction has been featured at major machine learning conferences and generated three patents.

In January 2023, Alex co-founded GPTZero with Edward Tian to detect AI-generated content. The platform analyzes sentence structure, syntax, and coherence. GPTZero secured $3.5 million in seed funding and later $10 million in Series A from top venture capital investors and CEOs. By 2024, the company had 7 million users and an international team of 22.

Alex and his co-founder were named to Forbes 30 Under 30 in Consumer Technology. He has spoken at Capitol Hill, Facebook’s Policy team, and the U.S. Department of State on misinformation, political polarization, and AI ethics. The GPTZero team was invited to close the TSX alongside Canada’s Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland following her announcement on research credits, and also closed the Nasdaq as part of being awarded a Top 50 SMBTech startup.

Alex now collaborates with institutions such as the Creative Destruction Lab and the Vector Institute’s FastLane program to advance AI innovation in Canada. His work at GPTZero continues to shape AI detection technology, ensuring the integrity of human-generated content in an era of increasing AI use.
