What is the intent of this process?

We are currently seeking talented candidates to fill various AU-02 positions across Canada in several program areas.

Potential positions to be staffed via this process may include, but are not limited to Income Tax Auditor, Excise Tax Auditor, GST/HST Auditor, International Tax Auditor, Financial Reviewer, Computer Audit Specialist and Valuator.

A few AU-02 key activities include :

  • Auditing taxpayers’ returns, books, records, taxpayer requests, and supporting documents to confirm and enforce compliance with the statutes administered by the CRA.
  • Discussing and negotiating proposed adjustments, penalty recommendations, technical and contentious issues with taxpayers or their representatives
  • Reviewing documents and researching legislation, jurisprudence, publications and policies.
  • Documenting audit quality review results, including identifying areas of concern.
  • Auditing and safeguarding of taxpayers’ income tax returns, books, records and supporting documents to determine the degree of compliance with the Income Tax Act or the Excise Tax Act.

Taxpayers include medium businesses, which are defined as:

  • Excise Tax: Owner-operated businesses, small corporations and partnerships with economic activity between 6 and 100 million dollars.
  • Income Tax: Corporations with annual gross revenues between 4 and 50 million dollars.

The intent of this process is to create pools of eligible candidates at various locations nationwide where positions are available or vacancies exist. Candidates will have the opportunity to indicate their preferred location(s) of work.

The pools established from this staffing process may be used to staff similar positions.

Preference for appointment will be given to eligible veterans and Canadian Forces members, Canadian citizens and permanent residents, in that order.

Essential staffing requirements

To be eligible, you must meet the following requirements.


The CRA’s minimum education standard for AU.

The CRA will accept foreign credentials as long as they are considered acceptable by a recognized Canadian educational institution. Candidates with foreign education credentials are required to provide proof of Canadian equivalency. Any applicable fees are the responsibility of the candidate. You must also satisfy at least one of the following options:

Have recent and significant experience* with businesses, partnerships, corporations, or trusts; acquired in a provincial tax administration, a public practice, a parapublic practice or an industry performing at least one of the following functions:

  • Conducting or managing audits;
  • Preparing corporate or trust tax returns;
  • Administering accounting policies of medium-sized businesses, which refers to partnerships, corporations and trusts with yearly gross revenues exceeding 4 million dollars (or equivalent or higher complexity);
  • Providing tax advice under the Income Tax Act, Excise Tax Act or provincial tax acts;
  • Interpreting statutes administered by the CRA

This experience may be acquired in a work context or during a period of practical experience designed to obtain an accounting designation from a recognized professional association (CPA, CGA, CMA, CA).


Have recent and significant experience* at the AU-01 level or equivalent within the CRA performing audits or examinations, or audit or examination support functions**.


A combination of the two above-mentioned options for a period of 18 cumulative months in the last 5 years.

*Recent and significant experience is normally associated with the performance of these functions as part of the major job duties accomplished for a period of 18 cumulative months in the last 5 years.

**Experience performing audits or examinations, or audit or examination support within the CRA may include, but will not be limited to experience in Audit, Business Intelligence & Quality Assurance (BIQA), Appeals, Criminal Investigations or Scientific Research & Experimental Development (SR&ED) for the purposes of administering or enforcing the Income Tax Act or the Excise Tax Act.

Essential requirements

The essential staffing requirements indicated below will be assessed during the process and may be used to identify candidates for positions.

  • Behavioural Cognitive Skills, Cognitive Abilities, Traits, and Drivers;
  • Performance Validation;
  • Second Language Evaluation (required only for bilingual positions);
  • Programmer Analyst Aptitude Test (PAAT) – Pass mark of 65%  (only for Computer Audit Specialists positions).

Please note that the assessment stage of this staffing process will be conducted in conjunction with staffing processes AU-01 (requisition 56451754) and AU-03 (requisition 56614633). If you apply on these processes, you will be assessed only once on common elements.

Testing sessions may be conducted periodically and may be scheduled during the day, in the evening or on weekends. Candidates are expected to make themselves available for assessment when scheduled. Failure to attend your scheduled assessment may result in the rejection of your application. Assessments will only be rescheduled for exceptional circumstances and supporting documentation may be requested by the Staffing Board. The Staffing Board will make these decisions on a case by case basis.

Asset staffing requirements

Additional asset staffing requirements may also be identified, assessed, and used as part of this staffing process. Any additional asset requirements will be communicated to candidates prior to being used.

We may limit the number of candidates to be considered further in this staffing process by using a top-down approach to select candidates with the best results achieved on assessments conducted within this process.
