CCBC 5 at 50 Initiative
October 13, 2020, marks 50 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and China. A diplomatic relationship between two countries of disparate size, culture, and political systems will inevitably have ups and downs, and as we know, this is to be expected in any bilateral relationship. As we approach this milestone anniversary, we reflect on how Canada has benefited from its relationship with China, and in so many cases, these benefits were the result of individual efforts. The relationship is really about people. People who had the forethought to establish relations when China was still in the midst of the Cultural Revolution. People who forged institutional and business ties. People who fought to demonstrate their country’s values in the course of developing relationships. People who spent time learning the other country’s language and culture. People who valued the other country’s opportunities so much that they made their homes, lives, and careers in the other country.
Canada China Business Council(CCBC)’s 5 at 50 initiative will recognize individuals in five categories who helped Canada benefit over these 50 years. A panel of arbiters will assess nominations and will choose up to 10 finalists and 1 recipient in each category.
CCBC will work with organizations across Canada to broadly solicit nominations and disseminate the stories of these individuals. One person in each category will be featured during CCBC’s AGM event on October 13, 2020, and finalists will be highlighted through a social media campaign.
Nomination is open to any individual with an accomplishment in the chosen category; CCBC membership is not required.
