CPAC Annual Gala celebrates three immigrant professionals

January 26, TORONTO – The Chinese Professionals Association of Canada (CPAC) and the Education Foundation of CPAC held their Annual Gala last night at the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North Hotel. The event was organized to raise funds for CPAC’s charitable work and celebrate the accomplishments of some remarkable immigrant professionals with the CPAC Professional Achievement Award.

Recipients of this year’s CPAC PA Award include University of Toronto scientist Vincent W.S. Chan, HSBC senior executive David Kuo and Canada’s celebrated ballerina Ms. Chan Hon Goh. Dr. Joe Ng, a Hamilton based entrepreneur and philanthropist, was also introduced at the gala as the new patron of the Education Foundation of CPAC.

Among the 500 or so guests attending the gala were federal Labour and Status of Women Minister Kellie Leitch, Ontario’s Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade Minister Michael Chan, Toronto Mayor John Tory, Acting Chinese Consul General Zhang Chuanbing and a host of other dignitaries from the three levels of government and the business and Chinese communities.

The CPAC Annual Gala raises funds for CPAC’s charitable work in three areas: helping internationally trained individuals who are new to Canada obtain licenses, find jobs and integrate into society; promoting education and providing scholarships and bursaries to students who have demonstrated social responsibility as well as academic excellence; and cultivating leadership among immigrant youth and professionals.

“Thanks to your generous support, CPAC and the Education Foundation are able to bring many much-needed programs and services to the immigrant community and help change the lives of hundreds of individuals. In total, over 2,000 skilled immigrants from different cultural/ethnic communities used our services and participated in training and career development events,” said Mr. Richard Lim, President of the Education Foundation of CPAC in his welcome speech. “CPAC’s community service and contribution has been recognized not only locally but also overseas. We were selected as one of the top 10 “Outstanding Overseas Chinese Organizations” among 25,000 around the world,” continued President Lim.

One of the highlights of the Gala was the presentation of the CPAC Professional Achievement Awards, which recognize the achievements of outstanding immigrant individuals who have overcome various barriers and made incredible strides in their professional careers. This year’s winners include three very accomplished immigrants in the fields of arts, management and science, who are Chan Hon Goh, Principal Dancer, International Guest Artist, Entrepreneur and Author; David Kuo, Ontario’s Head of Branch Network of HSBC Bank Canada; and Vincent W.S. Chan, MD, FRCPC, FRCA, Professor of Anesthesia at University of Toronto and anesthesiologist at the Toronto Western Hospital (See attachment for more detailed introduction of the winners of the 2014 CPAC Professional Achievement Award winners).

True to its promise, the CPAC Annual Gala proved a worthy networking event where community, business and political leaders mingled lively over cocktail and throughout the evening.

The Sunday night gala was successful due partly to the generous support of the event’s Gold Sponsors, RBC Royal Bank of Canada, Henry Global Consulting Group and BMO Bank of Montreal, and its silver sponsor Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories. The organizers also recognize the contributions of the silent auction item donors and thank the generous support of all other companies and individuals who attended or donated to the gala event.
