Applying to Medical School
In the past decades, there has been continued pressure on medical schools to select the best candidates from an ever-growing applicant pool. While specific admission criteria may vary across Canadian schools, the following aspects are of particular importance: academic performance/achievements, extracurricular activities (such as volunteer work and other work experience), letters of support, and the interview. As most candidates are high academic achievers, performance during the interview often play a critical role in separating outstanding students from others. During an interview, an array of key personality traits is often assessed, such as resilience and adaptability, team involvement and leadership, perspective taking and empathy, and work ethics. Good interview skills and preparation can help you maximize these desirable attributes you may have already had.
The goal of this seminar is threefold: explain the admission process for Canadian medical universities, putting together an excellent application, and preparing for the interview process.
Dr. Peter Wang received his medical degree from Tianjin Medical University and came to Canada as a visiting scholar in 1989. He earned his PhD at the University of Toronto. Over the past 27 years, Dr. Wang has been studying/working in four medical universities across Canada, his current primary academic appointment being a tenured professor of Epidemiology in the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. Wang has very broad research interests, which include cancer epidemiology and Asian immigrant health. He has supervised more than 20 PhD/MSc students and teaches several courses to medical students at MUN. Besides his research and teaching responsibilities, Dr. Wang has been sitting on MUN’s medical school admission committee for 6 years and has interviewed more than 100 medical school applicants. In addition to his specific expertise in helping people strengthen their medical school application packages and prepare interviews, Dr. Wang is also familiar with the Canadian medical school admission and training system in general.

CPAC Education Day helps immigrant families understand the Canadian education system and prepare their children for their academic and career future. The event provides parents with information that can help their children with making informed decisions on their educational future through expert advice of those in the field. This free event is open to all immigrants, including parents and students.

3. Education Fair: CPAC Education Day is a conference and exhibition where many colleges, universities and education-related service providers will be present, offering ample opportunities for participants to learn everything they want to know about Canadian education.
Education Day 2016 is open to the public. Pre-register for free entry ($5 entry fee for walk-ins at the door). Light refreshments provided.
