Another 21 Professionals Equipped to be Leaders of Tomorrow
TORONTO, May 05, 2014 – After six weeks of intensive training, a group of twenty-one internationally trained professionals graduated from the CPAC-TD Leadership Development Program (LDP), a program delivered by CPAC with funding in part from TD Bank Group. Participants received their certificates of graduation at a ceremony held last Saturday in the CPAC Conference Hall.
As a flagship program, LDP has been increasingly recognized as one of the best programs for immigrant professionals who wish to develop their leadership skills and advance their careers. “As a professional association, we have first-hand knowledge of the needs of internationally trained professionals. More importantly we have the expertise and resources to help them grow their potential and become leaders of the future,” said Ms. Margaret Yang, president of CPAC at the ceremony.
The CPAC-TD Leadership Development Program has helped some 80 people successfully move from technical roles to management positions or from junior roles to the higher management positions since its inception in 2010. The participants have diverse professional background and come from various sectors such as engineering, banking, finance, information technology, and health care.
The uniqueness of the LDP lies in its three component structure: in-class training, mentoring and the CPAC Leadership Club, which collectively create an all-round, continued learning and growing platform for established professionals to advance their careers and become leaders in Canada.
Mentoring is a value-added component of the program. In addition to classroom training, participants are matched with mentors from a wide range of industries and sectors, including engineering, finance, IT, consulting, and government. They are CEOs, Senior VPs, or Directors who have years of senior management and professional experience, as well as valuable insights into their respective industries that they will share.
The CPAC Leadership Club is another character of CPAC-TD Leadership Development Program. Graduates of LDP automatically become exclusive members of CPAC Leadership club. Activities are held periodically in the Club for continuous education in leadership and networking.
“This program is actually a turning point for me,” said Kelly Luo, a graduate who is Marketing Coordinator at Ricoh Canada Inc., “I am sure many of us feel that this program has been far more valuable and enjoyable than what we expected. The ‘How to Solve Conflicts’ workshop was my favorite. I find that the tools and methods are easy to use and very useful both at work and in my personal life,” continued Kelly. “What I liked most about this program was the opportunity to meet a group of very talented professionals with diverse backgrounds. I have learned a lot from each of them and I hope our relationship continues to grow even after the program ends.”
This is the fourth year that CPAC has run the program. “We’re delighted to partner with CPAC for the fourth year of its Leadership Development Program” said Ms. Kam Lo, District Vice President, Markham District, TD Canada Trust. “Addressing the needs of new immigrants through these kinds of programs is important to us, part of TD’s diversity mandate, and supported and championed at the highest of levels at the bank,” continued Ms. Lo.
CPAC was founded in 1992 with the objective of serving and representing the interests of immigrant professionals. The Association has a membership of 29,000 across Canada and is the largest of its kind in Canada. It has since expanded to serve diverse internationally trained professionals and plays an increasingly important role in our multicultural Canadian society, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area.
