More than 4000 People Celebrate Canada Day at 11th CPAC Annual Summer Festival

June 21, TORONTO – Over 4,000 people showed up today at the 11th CPAC Summer Festival-Celebrate Canada event at L’Amoreaux Park in Scarborough.  This event is one of the largest celebrations of cultural heritage in GTA held annual by the Chinese Professionals Association of Canada (CPAC).

One of the objectives of CPAC is to help newcomers integrate into and contribute to Canadian society, as well as to provide culture and recreational services for them.  The CPAC Summer Festival is a celebration for the entire community with this in mind.  The theme of this year’s event is ‘Celebrate Canada’ and it’s partly funded by Canadian Heritage through the Celebrate Canada program.

One of the most attractive activities of this year’s Summer Festival was the special appearance of Jason Burnett, RBC Ambassador and 2008 Canadian Olympic Silver Medalist in trampoline. Mr. Burnett is currently the world record holder for most difficult jump in competition. His performance brought the event to a climax. Burnett’s sponsor, SpringFree Trampoline, provided a trampoline at the site for everyone to play for free.

Other highlights of the day included five hours of performances, whole-day fun games for families and ethnic food tasting. The entertainment included folk dances, acrobatics, singing and martial arts performed by members of various organizations and ethnic groups. Kids were thrilled to play ‘pin the nose on the panda’, ring toss, basketball shootout and learn to make bracelet, clay doll, Chinese paper cutting. They also got their faces painted and participated in races with their parents and win prizes. The adults on the other hand, were very busy tasting traditional delicacies from different parts of China and the world, finding good bargains and collecting giveaways from the various vendors.

The first 200 CPAC members, who attended the event, were treated to a special gift bag full of swag. A lucky draw was held for many giveaways with the grand prize of two air tickets donated by Royal Sun Travel

“No matter where you are from, we are here today enjoying the summer fun as well as celebrating Canada Day,” said Ms. Margaret Yang, President of CPAC at the opening ceremony.

Mr. Chungsen Leung, MP of Willowdale, Ms. Soo Wong, MPP of Scarborough -Agincourt, Mr. Chin Lee, Toronto City Councillor (Scarborough – Rouge River) all delivered a few words. Vice Consul General Ms. Dongmei Wu, and Consul Mr. Shaojie Xia of the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto were also in attendance at today’s Summer Festival.
