As the Chinese New Year is around the corner, you are invited to celebrate the Year of Monkey with our fourth annual Toronto-Qinhuai Lantern Festival on Sunday, February 21st, 2016! Exclusively sponsored by Royal Bank of Canada this year, the RBC Toronto-Qinhuai Lantern Festival is organized by Ontario-Jiangsu Friendship Association (OJFA), Jiangsu Provincial Overseas Exchange Association, Jiangsu Provincial Overseas Chinese Affairs, and Canada-China Strategic Development Association.

Dr. Ningyu (Julia) Li, President of OJFA, said that in the process of Lantern Festival preparation, it happened to be the 30th anniversary of friendship between Jiangsu Province and Ontario. To celebrate the 30-year relationship, OJFA was invited to join Ontario Trade Mission led by Premier Kathleen Wynne to visit Nanjing in Jiangsu Province. With Premiers and Vice-Premiers of both Ontario and Jiangsu Province as witnesses, OJFA signed an agreement with Jiangsu Provincial Overseas Exchange Association regarding to organize the 2016 Toronto-Qinhuai Lantern Festival.

2016 RBC Toronto-Qinhuai Lantern Festival Light-up Celebration will be on the eve of Lantern Festival at Bond Education Group, our Venue Sponsor. A 4000-meter of colorful lights will be displayed then to reflect classic Jiangsu paintings and will keep lighting up over the following three days. During this celebration, there will be a series of Chinese traditional activities for everyone to experience. You will meet three intangible cultural heritage masters who come from Nanjing to Toronto to make Qinhuai lanterns on-the-spot for you. Besides the Jiangsu-manufactured Palace Lanterns, you can also enjoy hundreds handmade lanterns shaped in monkeys, rabbits, dragonflies, water lilies and lions, as well as taste an array of multicultural themed cuisine and Qinhuai style food.

Established by OJFA, the annual Toronto-Qinhuai Lantern Festival is a unique Chinese style celebration with great significance that becomes more and more popular each year in the GTA. This celebration is considered a “business card” event that offers an opportunity for people to experience Chinese traditional culture. Since 2013, we have successfully organized three annual Toronto-Qinhuai Lantern Festival events. Each year, besides the support from both Chinese and Canadian governments, we also get support and enthusiasm of residents from all across Toronto and Ontario. This event has received wide publicity in the local media, and has got congratulatory letters from the Chinese Consulate General in Toronto, Jiangsu Provincial Overseas Chinese Affairs and Overseas Exchanges Association, the City of Toronto and the Government of Ontario.
