Mr. Derek Chu

Associate Director/VP, Investment Banking, Scotia Capital

Mr. Chu is a Chartered Accountant who graduated with a Masters degree in Accountancy from the University of Waterloo in 2005.  After qualifying for his CA, Mr. Chu joined Scotiabank’s Investment Banking division in 2007 as an Analyst under the Power and Infrastructure group. He has worked heavily in both the renewable power and traditional utilities sector on a series of engagements involving equity offerings and M&A transactions.

Most recently, Mr. Chu lead teams to close the following significant transactions: Fortis Inc.’s US$4.3B acquisition of UNS Energy and concurrent $1.8B convertible debenture offering, the sale of Enwave to Brookfield Asset Management for $480 million and the sale of AES Gener’s US$1.4B 531MW run-of-river Alto Maipo hydroelectric development project in Chile to Antofagasta Minerals SA.

Derek has also worked closely with organizations such as TransAlta, Brookfield, Kruger Energy, and Emera Inc.

Xiaobo Wang

Director, Credit Risk Audit, Scotiabank

Xiaobo Wang, Director at Scotiabank, Credit Risk Audit. His main responsibilities include evaluating the design and operation of internal controls related to the management of credit risk for assigned projects/processes units in Global Risk Management, International Banking and Global Banking & Markets units.  Prior to 2012, Xiaobo worked at Scotiabank, Global Risk Management department for eight years, covering hedge fund risk management, structured transactions risk evaluation, Basel II implementation, and pricing model validation.

As an immigrant, Xiaobo also likes to help other fellow immigrants get a head-start in their professions through organizations such as Canadian-Chinese Finance Association (the“CCFA”), TRIEC Mentorship Program, etc.  He has served as the secretary general of the CCFA since 2008 and organized a number of seminars for financial professionals and exchanged ideas and shared financial knowledge with many Chinese delegations groups and other Canadian organizations. He is also a committee member of Global Association of Risk Professionals (“GARP”) Toronto Chapter.

Xiaobo holds a Ph.D degree from Boston University and an MBA degree from Schulich Business School.

Cultural Path to the Success in Careers

Dr. Chen Shen

Vice President, World Cultures and Senior Curator, Royal Ontario Museum

Dr. Shen began the Canadian-Chinese collaborative archaeological fieldwork projects in 1997. Currently Chen continues several projects in Palaeolithic archaeology in northern China, including field excavations at the World Heritage Site – the Zhoukoudian (Peking Man) site in Beijing and at Luonan Basin the Middle to Late Pleistocene human occupations in North China.

Dr Shen is a member of the museum’s senior management a Vice President responsible for research and collection of World Culture Departments including ROM’s collections of East Asia, West Asia, Egypt, Greek&Roman, Canadiana, European Art, New World Archaeology, Anthropology, and Textile and Costume. He serves as a Board of Director for the Toronto-based Canadian Foundation for Chinese Heritage Preservation. He is also an Academic Trustee member at the Archaeological Institute of America,  North America’s oldest and largest organization devoted to the world of archaeology.

Dr. Shen is the author of “Anyang and Sanxingdui: Unveiling the Mysterious of Ancient Chinese Civilizations” and “Warrior Emperor and China’s Terracotta Army”, and is the senior editor of “Current Research in Chinese Pleistocene Archaeology”. He also published many academic papers in both English and Chinese.
